If you have an old skirt that you have not worn in a while, you might want to consider re-fashioning it into a top. This works best for semi-full to full skirts that are more or less knee-length. A fuller skirt will result in a blousier top. This may also work for narrower skirts provided that they have slits on both sides.
For those of you who are not crafty with a needle and thread, have no fear! Believe it or not, this will only require minimal sewing skills.
Here’s all you have to do:
1. Turn your skirt inside out and upside down. (Note: the bottom of the skirt will become the shoulder part.)
2. Fold your skirt in half lengthwise to determine the center. Mark with fabric chalk or with the use of a pin.
3. Sew a simple running stitch (about an inch) on each half of the skirt. The area where you sew will depend on how full your skirt is and also on your measurements (width of shoulder, neck and armhole). You don’t really have to measure precisely. You may simply eyeball it and try it out first with safety pins. If your skirt has a slit on each side this will serve as your armhole.
4. Turn skirt outside in and you’re all done!
